for its opening word, אַשְׁרֵי, ’ašrê (NIV “blessed”), simply means “happy.” The NIV ends verse 1 with a full stop, but the NRSV with a semicolon, which is more appropriate, as the major cause of the happiness is surely found in verse 2.
